Ready for remote production: Lawo launches V__link4 all-in-one video-over-IP solution at IBC.

Lawo, renowned German manufacturer of pioneering audio and video broadcast equipment, introduces its V__link4 all-in-one-box solution for video-over-IP contribution at this year’s IBC.

The latest member of Lawo’s V__line includes everything from Video-over-IP coding to various testing and processing tools – providing increased flexibility and saving valuable rack-space, set-up time and production costs.

Lawo’s new V__link4 answers the demands of the broadcast industry based on the potential of today’s advanced IP network technology. In remote live production, IP is becoming a fundamental requirement for getting reliable, low latency and high-quality video from venues back to studios at reasonable cost. But also in “classic” applications – such as sending video from a stage-box in a stadium to an OB truck – IP technology provides economic and operational advantages. The Lawo V__link4 is a convenient tool for achieving this vision of IP-based broadcast production, providing a fully bi-directional, four-channel Video-over-IP interface, complete with all the processing tools usually needed to handle video and audio in a broadcast production.

The Lawo V__link4 provides four 3G/HD/SD-SDI inputs and outputs, as well as two 10Gbit Ethernet ports and four 1Gbit Ethernet ports, and MADI and RAVENNA audio connectivity. The V__link4’s four coding engines are designed to meet the highest demands in video quality and signal transport reliability. Its integrated error concealment with build-in frame store and parallel redundancy protocol (PRP), allow the system to overcome any single network failure without compromising data transmission. Format and quality of the IP video streams can be configured individually to meet the optimal ratio between picture quality, latency and bandwidth. Coding algorithms include DiracPro, JPEG2000, MJPEG and H.264, as well as a raw mode for transparent transport of uncompressed production-quality video.

Among other features, each channel includes frame synchronization, variable audio and video delays, embedding and de-embedding (inc. sample rate conversion) plus RGB Color Correction & Proc Amp. The V__link4 also features two Surround-to-stereo Downmixers per Embedder, Dolby® E Aligner, Quadsplit Multiviewer, Waveform and Vectorscope display, Timecode Insertion, Test Pattern Generator and Video ID Generator as well as Video / Audio Delay measurement.

Lawo’s new video processor also includes a stream director software, providing convenient management of V__link video streams. This Java™-based application is compatible with any computer running a Java™ Runtime environment such as Windows, Mac OSX or Linux. It features an elaborate auto-discovery mode, which automatically detects all available V__link devices within the network. Each video input can be given an individual name, which travels with the IP-stream. This allows easy identification of video signals also in large production environments. The routings are configured intuitively using “drag-and-drop”.

V__link4 can be monitored and operated using master control systems such as BFE’s KSC Manager or LSB’s VSM Virtual Studio Manager via the Ember+ protocol.
