Lawo solution at Stuttgart’s New Trade Fair Centre.

Networked mc²66 consoles provide superb audio for the grand opening.

On 19th October 2007, with Federal President Horst Köhler attending, the New Stuttgart Trade Fair Centre — long known as Germany’s biggest building site — was officially opened after a three-year construction period.

The glamorous opening ceremony took place in the new ‘International Congress Center Stuttgart’ (ICS) on the Trade Fair campus. During speeches to 2500 invited guests, including important members of the political and economic scene, speakers praised the 800 million Euro exhibition complex. Afterwards, guests of honor enjoyed an engaging live program with extracts from musicals, as well as panel discussions with some of the prominent attendees.

The opening party at the ICS was also an acoustic treat for all those attending, thanks to the Lawo solution of networked mc²66 consoles and a Nova73 HD router, all of which had been installed in the new complex. In the control room gallery, which accommodates audio, lighting and video control, two mc²66 consoles were used to mix the opening speeches, as well as the on-stage live music program. Working in tandem, the two Lawo consoles used a total of 120 audio channels for the mix.

The multi-functional ICS building, which can accommodate more than 9,000 people, can be adapted to suit a wide range of events due to its flexible partition wall system and versatile room design. The convention rooms and exhibition hall can all be modified internally, as can an additional convention hall for 2,700 visitors, which may be divided into four smaller halls.

Absolutely on schedule, Lawo’s all-inclusive solution of four networked mc²66 mixing consoles, one central Nova73 HD routing system and 16 DALLIS I/O systems, were installed months ago. This configuration provides the necessary flexibility and enables the center’s innovative interior design to be experienced not only visually, but aurally. Because all four mc²66 consoles share the I/O modules, problem-free readjustment to any combination of the room partitions is possible.

Two of the consoles in the ICS have 16+16+8 faders, one has 16+8+8 faders, and the fourth is equipped with 8+8+8 faders. Each console is fitted with a ‘Machine Control’ user panel. This offers comprehensive machine control for an external HD recording system, including a jog/shuttle wheel and locate functions.

Partially, the ICS was opened in the summer of 2007. By August, the installation of Lawo’s networked solution had been completed on time and on schedule. This enabled the systems to successfully prove their capability providing the sound for several large conventions, prior to the official opening event in October. Since then, the audio engineers have praised not only the consoles’ superb audio quality and the pleasing and faultless sound of the DSP, but also the philosophy behind the operational design of the consoles, that provides for fast and efficient handling of any program material.
