Lawo and YLE at the Winter Olympics 2006.

Finnish TV and Radio broadcast with Lawo sound from Torino.

Finnish TV and Radio YLEIS Radio (YLE) has relied upon Lawo equipment for many years. YLE`s good  experiences with Lawo products led the Finnish broadcaster into another cooperation on the occasion of the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino - as done before in Athens for the 2004 Olympic Games. The YLE team  broadcast from the Games with a Lawo mc²66 console, a zirkonXL mixer and a Nova73 HD Router, provided by Lawo on a rental basis. YLE operated in Torino with a 16+8+16-fader Lawo mc²66 console and a zirkonXL with 16 faders. Central signal routing for both consoles and the clean feed distribution were handled by a Lawo Nova73 HD router system.

On-air from the IBC

The whole system was set up in the International Broadcast Center (IBC) in Torino in which the sport reports for the connected countries were produced and broadcast.. YLE broadcast in Finnish and Swedish, the two official languages of Finland. While the large mc²66 console ran on-air, the zirkonXL was used for preproduction mixing. Thanks to the Nova73 HD, both consoles shared the signal pool and external feeds, as well as the studio microphones.  Also clean feeds and other specialised outputs were supplied quickly and efficiently.

Furthermore, Lawo’s longtime partner, the R&D company DSA-Volgmann, developed a visualisation software that controlled the zirkonXL and, additionally - as matrix and operating application - the Nova73 router via remote-MNOPL. This visualisation lent graphical support, which included operating elements that could be positioned freely on the screen and thus guaranteed fast and confident operation.
